Alaska was purchased from Russia on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million ($120 million adjusted for inflation) at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/kmĀ²). The land went through several administrative changes before becoming an organized (or incorporated) territory on May 11, 1912, and the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.

  1. Alaska Scholarship Applicant must be a high-school senior and attend one of the high-schools located in the state of Alaska;
  2. Alaska Scholarship Applicant must have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 at the time of completing the Alaska scholarship application;
  3. Alaska Scholarship Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, and Alaska resident at the time of completing the Alaska scholarship application;
  4. Alaska Scholarship Applicant must register his/her name and email address, and payment preference with National Academy of American Scholars;
  5. Alaska Scholarship Applicant must write an essay in 500 words or less why he/she believes that as an Alaska resident, how winning the Alaska scholarship will benefit the state of Alaska.
