The name “Ohio” originated from Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning “great river” or “large creek”. The state, originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory, was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Although there are conflicting narratives regarding the origin of the nickname, Ohio is historically known as the “Buckeye State” (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree) and Ohioans are also known as “Buckeyes”.

- Ohio Scholarship Applicant must be a high-school senior and attend one of the high-schools located in the state of Ohio;
- Ohio Scholarship Applicant must have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 at the time of completing the Ohio scholarship application;
- Ohio Scholarship Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, and Ohio resident at the time of completing the Ohio scholarship application;
- Ohio Scholarship Applicant must register his/her name and email address, and scholarship preference with National Academy of American Scholars;
- Ohio Scholarship Applicant must write an essay in 500 words or less why he/she believes that as an Ohio resident, how winning the Ohio scholarship will benefit the state of Ohio.
