West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions and broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War. The new state was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other one being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory). - West Virginia Scholarship Applicant must be a high-school senior and attend one of the high-schools located in the state of West Virginia;
- West Virginia Scholarship Applicant must have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 at the time of completing the West Virginia scholarship application;
- West Virginia Scholarship Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, and West Virginia resident at the time of completing the West Virginia scholarship application;
- West Virginia Scholarship Applicant must register his/her name and email address, and scholarship preference with National Academy of American Scholars;
- West Virginia Scholarship Applicant must write an essay in 500 words or less why he/she believes that as an West Virginia resident, how winning the West Virginia scholarship will benefit the state of West Virginia.
